short line scenic trains that take you. But hurry, most stop running in mid October! Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington, New
Hampshire, Ohio and other states have a variety of scenic train rides with
some offering dinner and wine with a view. But Colorado has perhaps the best selection of scenic rail
trains that will fill you with awe! They snake through the Rockies, teetering
around narrow cliffs with breathtaking views. |

Durango
& Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Plan to spend a day as the coal-fired
steam locomotive takes 3 1/2 hours to travel 45 miles from Durango to
Silverton, with a two-hour, 15 minute layover in Silverton. Several daily
departures through October 31. Fares are $79 adult, $49 child and first-class
seating available for over-21 ($179). Admission to Durango & Silverton
Railroad Museum included in all admission prices. Refreshments available on
the train. Warning: reserve 4-6 weeks in advance at least. |

Royal
Gorge Route Railroad The two-hour journey extends over 24 miles along the
Arkansas River that passes directly under the Royal Gorge Bridge and stops on
the Hanging Bridge that suspends the train above the river. Food and drink,
including a cash bar, are available on the train. Special "Teddy
Roosevelt"' car offers luxury-class accommodations. Dinner trains
($79.95-104.95) are scheduled on most weekends and holidays throughout the summer. Departs
at 7:00 p.m. daily through Sept. 30. Tickets: $39.95 adults, $29.50 children (3-12). Wanna ride with the engineer: $99. Reservations

Leadville,
Colorado and Southern Railroad A 2 1/2 hour ride from the highest
incorporated city in North America journeys across the Arkansas River valley
to a view of Fremont Pass and Climax. Open and closed cars. Departures September 9th & 10th, 16th & 17th, and 23rd & 24th. Tickets: $26.50 adults, $15
children (4-12). Reservations not necessary. |

Manitou
and Pikes Peak Cog Railway
The world's highest cog railroad takes passengers on a three-hour
round trip covering 8.9 miles from Manitou Springs to the summit of Pikes
Peak. Follows Ruxton Creek in Englemann Canyon, through Hell Gate, then a
steep climb to the top at 14,110 feet. Spend 30-40 minutes on top where
Summit House serves concessions. Up to four departures daily Aug 21 thru Oct 22. twice daily afterwards.

Cumbres
& Toltec Scenic Railroad Described as America's most authentic steam
railroad, the line runs through Oct. 15. The train, pulled by a
coal-fired steam-powered locomotive, travels between Antonito and Chama,

times on a twisting, turning 64-mile route through the San Juan Mountains.
It's an all-day trip as trains depart on alternate days from Antonito and
Chama with a one-hour bus-ride return trip. Departures from Chama are at 10
a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Departures from Antonito are at 10 a.m.
Mondays and Wednesdays. On Saturdays and Sundays, trains depart from both
Chama and Antonito. All trains stop at Osier for a hot lunch, which is
included in the fares, which range from $59 to $115 for adults, and
$30 to $36 for children ages 2 through 11. Reservations mandatory. |
